What do you remember about the place you were born and raised?
I lived at the foot of Yangming Mountain
when I was a child.
So we lived in a kind of villa-type house.
In the front, we had a garden with a swing in it.
So when we were young,
we liked to play hide and seek in the garden
and then nearby,
right as you walked outside,
there was a river and riverside park.
So we often went skating,
riding bicycles,
all at the riverside park.
And at that time during Chinese New Year,
you could set off firecrackers there.
This was so much fun as a child.
I still remember it,
something that left a clear impression on me
was going to the Lantern Festival,
taking lanterns out in the evening to play.
As a kid, the surrounding environment
wasn’t like cities today.
It was a very suitable place for kids to grow up.
So what did you like to play or do when you were a kid?
When I was in school
I would often shoot rubber bands
with the girls after class.
Or play some hide and seek.
The boys usually prefered playing dodgeball
but I was scared of getting hurt
so I didn’t join.
After returning home,
I would play with the neighbors nearby.
We’d all go…
we liked small animals so much
that we’d go to catch sparrows.
There was one time I wanted to raise it,
but in the end–
because I thought it was so cute—
but when I brought it back home
I found that it could not be raised
and later died
so I learned that wild sparrows weren’t suitable
for humans to raise.
That's about it.

What is the artwork about?
It is about what happened when my mother was a child. What those children did that year in Taiwan.

You can see a very cute bird that is standing on a girl’s hand and the girl and the bird are standing in a park that has people playing behind them and lots of green trees beside the road.
Was your goal when making this artwork?
My goal for this assignment was to let other people know what the Taiwanese were doing at my mother’s age so that they can learn Taiwanese culture easier and faster this way.
How do you want the viewer to feel when they look at your interview, transcript, and artwork?
I hope that they can understand what children were doing when my mother was just a little kid. Also, I hope that other people around earth can all understand our Taiwanese culture faster and easier. Or maybe we can even teach our culture and ancient environment and they can start thinking about moving to Taiwan!
What else do you want viewers to know about your artwork?
My artwork is just about what those Taiwanese children were doing at an early age, also to let them know how my mother grew up in this city called Taipei. I still hope that they can understand everything that I want to tell them but for me, this artwork is very good and I am happy about it
